Pipe Cleaner Animals
I asked my daughter about her favorite crafting memories, and the first thing she mentioned was pipe cleaners and beads.
I provided her with pipe cleaners in many colors, and different thicknesses. Some of them are thick-to-thin in waves, and sometimes we had metallic ones. Many kinds are available in craft stores.
I also purchased beads in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Most of the beads we used when she was younger had holes large enough to slip on pipe cleaners.
When given several materials and allowed to create, she would sometimes twist the pipecleaners into various animal parts and connect them into a whole, stringing beads for feet, pom-poms, eyes, knees, or parts only she would recognize. She had a wonderful time creating her zoo of animals, some from real animals and some fanciful.
We hung some of them from fishing line and attached them to dowels to make a hanging mobile for her room. You could also use a couple of coat hangers attached together to hang pieces from.
This is a great project because it allows freedom in creating, and at the same time teaches building parts and assembling them into a whole, and 3-dimensional sculpting skills.

Personalized Kid's Craft
Now that my daughter is older, she has some very particular interests. Sometimes kids will fall in love with a movie, book, video game, etc., but licensed things can be hard to find to suit their interest.
We used shrink plastic to allow my daughter to personalize many items. She printed pictures of the characters that she found online, placed the shrink plastic over it, and traced the outlines. (Sand the shrink plastic in several directions before tracing, if necessary.) She colored the images in herself, cut them out, and baked them.
The resulting figures adorn her light switches, dangle from her shoelaces, and hung from her lampshade, function as a zipper pull for her purse, and are made into a mobile for her room. She loves being able to personalize her space with things she loves!
