Scrapbooking - journaling
The cold winter months after the holidays, when you have stacks of new photos, are the perfect time to scrapbook them! Now, before you forget the stories that go with the photos, and the cute things a child said, or what your favorite memory from this past Christmas was (especially if it is something you DON'T have a photo of to remind you later).
Speaking of which, one of the most helpful things you can do for yourself is to journal before you begin cutting and adhering. Even before you begin chosing papers and embellishments.
Take the time to sit and go through your photos, and write out what you want to remember about each. Names and dates are always important, but so are the funny anecdotes or tender moments that happened that may or may not (probably the latter) be actually shown in the photos. Take time to reflect about what you WANT MOST to remember, and WRITE IT DOWN!!!
That way if, like so many of us, despite your best intentions, you become too busy to scrap everything right away, you will still have that most precious part intact, along with the photos, ready to go into the album along with them.
As an aside, many people like to use their personal blogs as time goes along to make note of those things they want to remember, and can refer to that as they scrapbook. In the past I have used emails to my mother about her grandchild's latest escapades in the same way. Consider printing them out though, if you want to use them in this way. (I learned the hard way, and lost a lot of precious information with an email account.)
Then when you are ready to actually scrapbook, it will be easier to choose colors and embellishments to suit the actual MOOD you want to create, instead of trying simply to decide what color will best accentuate the eyes in the focal photo. I'm not putting that technique down, sometimes that's exactly what you WANT to do, but sometimes the color is better selected to fit the mood of the memory.
Most of all, have fun and HAPPY SCRAPPIN'!
One of my favorite magazines for scrapbooking inspiration and information is Memory Makers magazine. It features beautiful layouts in a wide variety of styles, with something to suit everyone's taste whether you prefer the classic heritage look or the sassy, funky new contemporary colors. The techniques featured range from simple "why didn't I think of that?" ideas to truly innovative and creative methods for embellishing your scrapbook pages.
And if scrapbooking isn't your craft, check out other craft magazines. With such a wide variety available, you are sure to find something to tickle your imagination and jump-start your creativity!
